Here at Bath & Unwind, we have recently taken on Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Essence, so we thought we should explain what an essence actually is.

Essence

An extract or concentrate obtained from a plant or other matter and used for flavouring or scent.
Synonyms: extract, concentrate, quintessence, distillate, elixir, abstraction, juice, tincture, solution, dilution.
OK, time to drop the knowledge bomb!
Essence is a new step into our daily skincare routine, inspired by one of the most innovative and influential beauty destinations in the world, Asia. Specifically Korea.
It is a water-based product, enriched in active ingredients.

Listen to your skins desires: Omoroessence from Omorovicza
You may now be thinking “what is the difference between a serum and an essence?”
They are very similar in that their end result is basically the same, however there are some noticeable differences that define an essence. Essences are traditionally know for being more lightweight and less concentrated than serums. A serum is always the most concentrated when it comes to active ingredients. The essence prepares the skin before serum is applied. The idea is to apply the essence after your toner to add another layer of hydration for the skin before applying a serum and it also acts as a booster for the serums performance.
 .
So what is the difference between a toner and essence?
A toner is a key part of any skincare routine. It helps to nourish and replenish the skin after cleansing, and is often packed full of antioxidants to rejuvenate the skin. Whereas an essence boosts moisture levels and rehydrates.
Essence contains active ingredients that enhance your skin and boost the actions of a serum.
.
Can it be used on sensitive skin, and will my skin tolerate the ingredients?
Simply. Yes
The clinical tests have been conducted on a panel of volunteers including those with sensitive skin. The tests showed a good tolerance to sensitivity. However, like most products containing glycolic acid, the skin needs to adapt to its new routine.
Around 5% of women who have recently switched to using an essence experienced a slight tingling sensation, however this stopped and they did not have these symptoms after a few applications. A high concentration of glycolic acid can cause irritation, this would only be experienced whilst having a chemical peel. Essence products for sale on site, would never contain such high levels and would not cause serious irritation.
.
What is the pH level of an essence?
Essence has a pH level of 5.5 which is slightly more acidic than alkaline. It is the same pH level as your skin.
 .
We also stock lots of other brands that have essence products and as Caudalie is new to the game. We thought it would be nice to share some other brands and feedback from our customers these have had.
