What is your skin type?

We all have it, we try to look after it, but how many of us can confidently say what skin type we are and what products are right for us?

By reading this you should be able to have a better insight and understanding of the different skin types and most importantly your skin type.

Underneath your skin are glands called sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for protecting your skin with natural lubrication (oils) called sebum. However, a higher level of DHT in the body causes over production of sebum, leaving your skin looking oily.

What are the common reasons of oily skin?

  • Hereditary
  • Diet
  • Hormone levels
  • Humidity and temperature
  • Allergic reaction

The daily skin routine

Step 1: A Facial Scrub is an important step in the daily routine to those who have an oily skin type. It will scrub away dead skin cells and exfoliate the skin and reduce the chances of ingrowing hairs.

We recommend: Proverb Skin Definition Facial Scrub

Step 2: A cooling, cleanser will hydrate the skin without adding oil. It will also aid and soothe tender and irritated skin.

We recommend:  Alpha H Triple Action Cleanser

Step 3: Finishing with a light moisturiser will ensure your skin is protected and most have anti-ageing properties. Using a matte moisturiser will reduce shine on the skin

We recommend: Korres Borage Anti-shine Moisturiser

Dry skin usually stems from low sebum production, the sebum is the natural oils in the skin. Dry skin can lack elasticity and is usually very sensitive to the sun, wind and cold temperatures. The skin may sometimes become very dehydrated because the oil glands are not producing enough sebum.

A lack of Vitamin A and B vitamins can also contribute to dry skin.

What are the common reasons of dry skin?

  • Harsh weather conditions
  • Hereditary
  • Frequent washing
  • Medication
  • Diet
  • Age
  • Dehydration
  • Smoking

The daily skin routine

Step 1: A light and smooth daily facial wash will be non-abrasive and still cleanse the skin whilst removing impurities.

We recommend: Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel

Step 2: Following on with a moisturising pre shave oil will hydrate the skin and soothe any irritating dry areas. Cooling ingredients such as aloe vera, jojoba or peppermint are perfect for this.

We recommend: Gentlemen’s Tonic Pre Shave Oil

Step 3: After shaving, it is important to use a moisturiser, if you are a man that has dry skin. This will help prevent irritation and soothe the skin, post shave.

If you have combination skin, you could say your skin has a split personality. It is usually the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) that is the problem area and becomes oily with large pores and then dryer on your cheeks. However it is thought to be the most common skin type. Generally those with combination skin have more active oil glands which is why these areas are more noticeable with oil on the surface of the skin and larger pores.

What are the common reasons of Combination skin?

  • Hereditary
  • The environment
  • Hormones and stress
  • UV damage
  • Fitness

The daily skin routine

Step 1: A multi-purpose cleanser will be soothing and beneficial to ensuring your skin is getting the nutrients it needs whilst helping to balance the oils.

We Recommend: Murad Man Cleansing Shave

Step 2: When there is an issue with the T-zone, you may find yourself focusing on treating these areas and neglecting the cheeks and jaw line. To ensure you are caring for these areas before shaving will decrease the chances of irritating these areas.

We Recommend: Refinery Shave Oil

Step 3: It might seem strange to apply a moisturiser to oily skin, however oil will fight oil and therefore it reduces the visibility of oily residue. You may need to apply more moisturiser to the dryer areas, such as the cheeks and jaw line.

We Recommend: Proverb Oil Balance Pro Moisturiser

With so many brands, it is impossible not to find the perfect match

Some of you may find that you are not any of the skin types mentioned, this probably means that you have a balanced skin type. The texture of the skin is even and pores are barely visible, the skin does not display any obvious imperfection. However this does not mean it can’t change, it is common for balanced skin to become oily or dry throughout life and therefore skin care is still as important.

What are the common reasons of balanced skin?

  • Good hydration levels
  • Respond well to temperature changes
  • Respond well to UV rays
  • Youth
  • Hereditary
  • Balanced hormone levels

The daily skin routine

Step 1: By using a gentle and non abrasive like cleanser, you will not damage the skin or irritate the skin leading to dry skin. Using a gentle cleanser daily will keep your skin from harbouring bacteria which could lead to blemishes or acne.

We Recommend: Omorovicza Cleansing Foam

Step 2: After the skin is cleansed, it is important to protect the skin from ingrowing hairs or shaving rash. It is your choice which type of shaving product suits your best e.g; cream, foam, oil or gel.

We Recommend: American Crew Ultra Gliding Shave Oil

Step 3: Even though your skin at the moment reactions well to UV rays, well does not mean your skin is indestructible and SPF is still very important all year round. The higher the SPF the better the protection.

We Recommend:  Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+
