You may have heard us talking about it on Bath & Unwind. You may have read a blog listing its many benefits to your skin. You may have even seen it on one of QVC’s beauty shows. But if you haven’t, or have but are still unsure of exactly what all the fuss is about, I’m going to tell you right here, right now what exactly Alpha H Liquid Gold is and how best to use this product to get the results you want for your skin.
Firstly, here are some things that Liquid Gold is not:
- A cleanser, toner or moisturiser
- An acid that is going to burn your face off
- Difficult to use
- A load of hype/a product that will just end up sitting on your bathroom shelve gathering dust due to lack of results.
In fact, Liquid Gold is a treatment product – much like a treatment serum that you may already use – just a bit more, well, liquid-y!
The main ingredient in the product is a naturally-derived substance from the sugar cane plant called glycolic acid. Now I understand that the term ‘acid’ may have you running for this hills right now, but please do let me cast you back to your school chemistry days to remember that an acid is simply a substance with a pH of less than 7, and that skin’s natural surface pH is slightly acidic itself at around 5.5 and so it actually favours slightly acid products. Liquid Gold contains 10% glycolic acid, which gently works to dissolve the the fats that are binding the dead skin cells on the upper layers of your skin together, so that they are easily removed to reveal the fresher, younger, and more healthy looking skin cells below. Over time, this will reduce fine lines, pigmentation, scarring, soften wrinkles and generally improve the skin’s functioning. See? Not scary in the slightest!

One of the best things about this product is that it is suitable for pretty much every skin type, even you sensitive folk. If you do have sensitive skin, it’s recommended that you apply the product to a cotton pad dampened with a small amount of water before applying to your skin to begin with so the solution is slightly diluted and your skin can become accustomed to it – there should be a slight tingling sensation for a moment, which shows the product is working and should not be feared (in fact you will probably come to love that tingling sensation as most do, myself included). If you have more thickened or oily skin, you should be fine to apply Liquid Gold using a dry cotton pad.
The product should be used at night after cleansing with a non-foaming cleanser, 2-3 times per week on non-consecutive days and a least one day before/after any other glycolic or AHA type treatment. Used like this, a bottle of Liquid Gold should last 3-4 months, making it great value for such a highly concentrated and results driven product. To get the full benefits of the product, refrain from using any serums or moisturisers on the nights you use Liquid Gold to allow the product to go to work, loosening those dead skin cells uninterrupted.
How long will it take to see results? Well, it depends on the current health of your skin and how many of those dead skin layers you have to shift, but most people will see a result within 2 weeks and definitely within a month; many will also notice an immediate brightening, smoothing and mattifying effect as the product wipes away the already loosened surface dirt and dead cells.
Do make sure that your regular moisturiser, BB Cream or foundation has an SPF included in the formula to make sure you’re protecting those lovely new, plump skin cells from any UV damage (which will happen even in the groggiest of British autumns), and if it hasn’t, we recommend Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF50+. Apart from this, and ensuring that you’re not using a foaming cleanser as mentioned above, you can see how quick and easy it is to add this product to your skincare routine and to boost the effects of the other products you are using alongside it.

Can you please explain why you can’t use this with a foaming cleanser? At the moment I’m using the Caudalie foaming cleanser. Does the Korres White Tea Fluid Gel Cleanser count as a foaming cleanser (because that’s the other one I have in my cupboard)?

Hi Maree,
That’s a really good question! The reason Alpha H advise against using Liquid Gold with a foaming cleanser is because the ingredients that make the cleanser foam tend to strip the skin of it’s natural barrier and alters the skins natural pH from slightly acidic (where is should be) to more alkaline pH. When an acidic product such as Liquid Gold is then applied, it has to work against the now alkaline pH of your skin to be able to work effectively and it’s therefore unlikely you will see a significant, positive change in your skin.
The Korres White Tea Facial Fluid Gel Cleanser is low foaming and should be pH neutral, so may be OK to use in conjunction with the Liquid Gold. I’m assuming you’re using these foaming cleansers because you have oily skin? If so, bear in mind that after a few weeks of using Liquid Gold your skin should naturally re-balance itself and any excessive oiliness you have, and so you may find you need to switch to a more gentle cleanser anyway.

When my Liquid Gold arrives I’ll change cleansers. I have Combination skin really… and I’m quite lazy and find these the easiest types of cleansers to use in the shower! If you can think of a better cleanser (that I can still use easily in the shower) to use in conjunction with the Liquid Gold, then I would appreciate your advice.

Hi there, I am of African descent and would like to ask if this is suitable for my dark skin. I have acne prone skin with plenty of dark spots and ance scaring on my cheeks and jaw line. My forehead is surprisingly very clear. Will this somehow help me? By the way, that was a brilliant post.

hi there, i have just received the liquid gold and i am prone to acne skin, in the past i have used roactane, would this be suitable for my skin? I’m interested in your balancing cleanser,would this be suitable for my skin? does this cleanser have oil in it? if not i would be interested in trying a sample.

I have pretty clear skin, I don’t suffer from breakouts just the odd hormonal spot near my time of month. I have acne scarring from my teens though and I was wondering whether the liquid gold or the micro cleanse with glycolic acid would be more effective or would it be worth getting both. Hi can I use liquid gold alongside liquid gold perfecting daywear or are these supposed to be used in isolation of the other?

I was going to ask the same question about the foaming cleanser. I have only recently started using Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Cleanser.
Does that mean I can no longer use it at all? Or can I use it in the morning and on the evenings that I am not using Liquid Gold?
