Since I started working at Bath & Unwind, I have become a bit of a nail polish addict. This is my guide to the perfect DIY manicure.
Step 1. Firstly, remove any traces of nail varnish from your nails with some cotton wool and nail polish remover. I like to use OPI Acetone Free Polish Remover as it doesn’t dry out my nails.
Step 2. Next, neaten out your nail with a file. I love the Butter London Banana Nail File because its unique shape is perfect for following the curve of your natural nail shape.
Step 3. Now use a cuticle oil all over your cuticles, such as Badger Balm Cuticle Care Balm, and gently scrape your cuticles with a cuticle pusher. This will also make it easier to get rid of any nail varnish that you get on your skin by mistake.
Step 4. Paint your nails with a clear undercoat. This is vital to make sure you get even coverage of the colour you apply. OPI Start to Finish is great as it dries really quickly and is designed to be used as a top coat too.
Step 5. Next, choose your colour and roll the polish bottle between your hands. This will get rid of any air bubbles and even out the colour. Starting in the middle of the nail, gently let all the polish gather at the cuticle and then sweep the brush upwards. You should always try to paint each nail with only three strokes, starting in the middle and then around the edges.
Step 6. If you get any nail colour on your fingers, use the wooden end of a match stick to save you ruining your freshly painted nails. If you are using a dark colour and this doesn’t get rid of all traces, kill two birds with one stone and do the washing up after your nails are dry and try again!
Step 7. When you are sure the nail varnish is completely dry, apply a clear top coat. This will help your manicure last longer.
