Behind the brand… Birch & Brook

birch-brookWe’ve fallen hard for Birch & Brook with their beautiful fragrances all about capturing the experience the scent provokes, taking you back to a summer festival, days spent wandering through an old library or discovering a secret garden. We wanted to know more about the woman behind the brand so have asked founder Jessica Jones to fill us in on what led her to create such quintessentially English candles.

The beginnings of Birch & Brook

Birch & Brook was founded by Jessica Jones in 2013. With a background in fine art and design and a passion for fragrance, Jessica found it was a natural progression to express creative ideas through the medium of scent. Growing up in Suffolk, and having lived in London for the past 15 years, she drew upon her own memories and inherent Britishness to create a collection of candles which encapsulate the joys of slow living, encouraging people to take time out to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Candles that capture nostalgic experiences

Birch & Brook offers a unique perspective on fragrance and captures the ‘experience of scent’. Each of our fragrances creates a sense of place inspired by Jessica’s own upbringing. For example, Dressing Room is reminiscent of her grandmother’s dressing table and the smell of old fashioned make-up and rose water. Library, a leathery, woody fragrance is inspired by antique bookshops and days spent studying at the V&A. Each distinct fragrance has been created by Jessica in partnership with leading perfumers and each box has been designed ‘in house’ by Jessica with vintage textile prints personal to each candle, creating a truly unique collection.

Birch & Brook’s favourite candle

Library is a distinctly unisex fragrance and has a unique quality that our customers love. The candle was inspired by Jessica’s days studying in the V&A library surrounded by old leather bound books and scribbling pencils. Enclosed in Guaiac wood and patchouli, this aromatic scent tells a story of discovery and contemplation. Cinnamon, clove buds, and soft base notes of cedar and moss all recall the quiet decadence of a stolen afternoon, lost in the world of a long forgotten book.

Within 6 months of launching it was a finalist at the 2014 Beauty Shortlist Awards for ‘Best Luxury Candle’ and has gained legions of followers from fashion publications to bloggers to master perfumers such as Mark Buxton. Recent features include Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Bella J, SheerLuxe and You Magazine.

All about the candles

Our candles are made from 100% natural wax blend with a natural cotton wick. We have chosen this wax as there are no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means it’s less likely to trigger allergies. The wax is also biodegradable, made from renewable sources and it’s longer lasting – soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle. All of our materials, including packaging, are sourced from the UK so we do all we can to support our local industries.

Top tip: if you like the smoky aroma of lapsang souchong tea, try our Fireside candle.

Juicy Travel Tips from a Top Nutritionist (pardon the food pun, couldn’t resist!)

At Bath & Unwind, we have been focusing on travel and how it affects our beauty regimes. Being on a flight and in a new foreign climate can play havoc with your skin, however, we are in the fortunate position that we have access to the best beauty products in the world. To have the glowing, dewy skin that we all crave is also hugely down to your diet and lifestyle. Always striving for the perfect skin we asked the fabulous Fiona Campbell (a registered Nutritionist and Sky News and BBC Broadcaster) to give us her tips on how to look and feel your best when travelling. This is what she suggested:-

  • Keep fresh water with you at all times to sip on throughout the day. I always buy a bottle for my flight in duty free, just in case there are delays.
  • Start your day with hot water – it’s great for liver and digestive function, particularly if you add a squeeze of fresh lemon.
  • Caffeine can easily disrupt the movement of food through your digestive tract, so if you suffer with irritable digestion, avoid drinking caffeinated drinks until mid-morning to allow your breakfast to go down first..
  • Who doesn’t love a nice glass of champagne or wine on a flight? I do! But stick to just one every 3-4 hours if you can, as alcohol and flying are a double whammy where hydration and the health of your skin are concerned.
  • Travelling to hot country? Coconut water is sold all over the world and is a good way to stay hydrated in the heat.

Take a look at Fiona’s inspiring Instagram feed here

  • Take a good probiotic complex with you. Your digestive tract is where 80% of your immune system tissue lives, so it’s important to keep it healthy.
  • Make sure you get enough fibre – not the tough insoluble fibre you find in Bran Flakes, but the soluble fibre you find in things like oats, beans, lentils, and fresh fruit. If these foods don’t feature in the local diet of the country you’re visiting, make room in your suitcase for some ground psyllium husks – just make sure that you take one daily serving between meals, and with plenty of water.
  • Take the time to chew your food thoroughly and eat in a relaxed environment – being on holiday is the perfect time to practise this! In my experience up to 70% of symptoms of IBS and digestive upset are resolved through mindfulness practise alone.
  • Try to eat your last meal 3 hours before you go to bed, so that your body can focus on healing and repair during sleep instead of digestion. You’ll soon find that you wake up feeling much more refreshed and energetic if you do.

  • Start your day with a protein rich breakfast. Omelettes are a great source of protein and healthy fats which will take much longer to break down into sugar so you’ll stay fuller for longer. I take my own homemade granola, or a bag of Lizi’s Granola which is renowned for its low glycaemic load – check out my 60 second videos with the makers of Lizi’s Granola below.
  • You’re bound to drink a bit more on holiday but remember to have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink to keep you hydrated.

  • Wondering how to beat a holiday hangover? My favourite go-to breakfast is a big glass of water, followed with an omelette with fresh greens. The healthy fats in the eggs help your cells to recover, and the B vitamins in the greens provide the nutrients that your body has lost during the night.
  • If I’m planning to indulge in a few drinks on holiday, I always pack a bottle of Nutri’s Plant Source Antioxidants. It’s got things like milk thistle which help to protect my liver. Taken before you go out, and first thing in the morning, it really makes a difference!

Top Beauty Tips from a Professional First Class Traveller

This month at Bath & Unwind we’ve been talking all things travel, and if you’ve spent any time on an airplane, you know that it plays havoc with your skin. You start out feeling fresh, and you arrive at your location feeling dehydrated, tired and looking dull. We asked Gail to shares her tips, secrets and stories from working as a First Class Flight Attendant, if anyone is going to know how to conquer our beauty travel issues it’s her!

GAIL: My life as a First Class Flight Attendant

Having worked as a First Class Flight Attendant for more than 15 years, I often get asked to share stories and experiences over dinner and drink, and I have plenty of tales to tell. However, it’s a first for me to be asked for my personal tips on beauty and wellbeing. Well I guess I can say I am a professional traveller.

At 39 years old, a female Cabin Manager for a long haul airline, I’ve travelled the world! Although, travelling is not always an adventure, for some it’s a necessity. Not all the passengers on board are there for pleasure… some excited, those nervous or stressed, many faces telling a different story! Whether you’re travelling for business, last voyage as an elderly grandmother, a young mother excited to introduce her new born to the extended family, backpackers, honeymooners, emigrants… the list can be emotionally endless!

The celebrities are the ones who gain the most excitement from the crew, it can add a highlight to our day in the sky. Having the privilege as the manager to introduce myself to many a celebrity onboard this can be both nerve wrecking and a dream come true (of course discretion is our priority). Now I’m not saying that over the years I haven’t glanced over the first class cabin divider to see what our celebs have changed into for comfort or which hand luggage their sporting the season but whats most interesting especially to us females is whats their beauty routine onboard?

Before take off

The undoubtedly, unashamedly, number 1 top tip from all celebs is that they cleanse their skin before the flight and remove every item of their make up (unlike the crew who are unable due to work load). After a day at work then travel to the airport maybe by public transport, the airport atmosphere and the air-conditioned climate, our skin must be screaming to be cleansed from the already hectic start!

Bath and Unwind’s Product Suggestions:-

  1. Caudalie Micellar Cleansing Water  – removes makeup thoroughly yet gently and cleanse the skin at the same time (available in travel size).
  2. Yes To Carrots Fragrance Free Face Wipes – perfect for freshening up on the go (and are biodegradable too!).
  3. Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm – melts into skin to lift away dirt, grime and impurities, including stubborn make-up.

Makeup to wear (if you must!)

As flight attendants we cant be seen without make up, there would be no glamour at all!  So for us and those of you can bare to be bare faced the answer is… mineral make up! I like to use a good moisturiser as my base topped by a mineral powder blended onto the face (this can be built up for added coverage).

Bath and Unwind’s Product Suggestions:-

  1. Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Powder – blends with your skin tone, is easy to apply and allows your skin not only to breathe but your natural glow to shine through, as well as offering long term coverage for those long flights.
  2. Perricone MD No Lipstick Lipstick – leaves lips with a beautiful natural rosy colour and shine.
  3. Green People Mineral Powder Blush – infused with earth minerals and beeswax, it offers SPF 15 protection and a natural flush of colour to the cheeks.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

As for hydration this is the key factor to successful flight for you and your body, this is your ultimate survival tool! Health-wise drink a litre or two throughout the day or prior to your flight (as much as possible), you will always be provided with water onboard so take a small bottle on board. The one thing we’re not shy normally to ask for is alcohol, unfortunately this isn’t the answer… keep alcohol and coffee intake to a minimum! Boring as it seems the H2O not only hydrates you but keeps your skin supple and your brain engaged. On arrival when you’re tired and cant find your passport, the airport exit or the taxi signs, the water will have kept your brain alert and you’ll see you can manage these tasks without looking lost and requiring tears of frustration.

Bath and Unwind’s Product Suggestions:-

  1. Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist a neroli and rose scented face mist to refresh and wake up tired skin.
  2. Korres Wild Rose 24-hour Cream – a 24-hour rich moisturiser that deeply hydrates thirsty skin (perfect for those long haul flights!).
  3. Natural Spa Factory Green Tea, Rose Water & Aloe Face Tonic – sweep away the day’s grime with this soothing facial toner, packed with antioxidants to balance the skin and calm redness.

Moisturising well the morning of a long haul flight is also a great tip, especially if you’re going to the sunshine or on holiday and hoping for an all over tan! I like to use one with an SPF  – remember, when you’re up in the sky you are closer to the sun, and more prone to sunburn!

Bath and Unwind’s Product Suggestions:-

  1. Ultrasun Face SPF 30 – protect your delicate skin from harmful rays with this high SPF moisturiser.
  2. New CID i – tint Tinted Moisturiser SPF 15 – perfect for when you want the no-make-up look, this lightweight tinted moisturiser gives a sheer luminous coverage with added SPF 15 sun protection.
  3. Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF 50+ – guards the skin against UVA and UVB damage and help prevent premature ageing.

After landing

Jetlag and tiredness are often confused! Jet lag occurs when to travel to another time zone completely  (travelling form the UK to USA or Middle East). The best tip for this is to get yourself as quickly as possible onto the local time, vitamin D provided by the bright light from the sun is ideal recovery for jet lag.

My favourite and ultimate luxury treatment after a long haul flight is to have reflexology, the relief, the destress and the relaxation followed by herbal tea and a deep afternoon or evening sleep which follows is my ultimate recovery tip for any long haul traveller.

I hope you find all my tips useful for your next trip away!

Behind the brand: Omorovicza

We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Hungarian spa brand, Omorovicza. Here’s why you MUST try this beautiful skincare range…

The story behind Omorovicza

In the 1800s the Omorovicza family built the Rácz Bath in Budapest, on the site of a medieval healing spring renowned for its curative properties. 200 years later, founders Margaret and Stephen de Heinrich de Omorovicza met in the beautiful city of Budapest. Stephen had been drawn there to explore his roots. Margaret, an American, had been brought to the city by a diplomatic posting.  Relaxing at the Rácz Bath and other ancient thermal baths, the couple were amazed by the effect the mineral rich healing waters had on their skin and saw their potential to be harnessed in a skincare range. They embarked on a journey to replicate in skincare the effects of the baths on their skin.

Why do customers love your brand?

The main point of difference of difference lies in the waters Omorovicza uses. All skincare, except oils is made of a large amount of water. Traditionally that water is de-mineralised and inert. At Omorovicza the water is itself a key active ingredient. They all come from Budapest, Hungary, the city with the largest number of thermal springs in the world.

All you need to know… Balance Me

We caught up with the faces behind natural skincare brand, Balance Me. Read on to see what they had to say…

The story behind Balance Me

Sisters Clare and Rebecca Hopkins founded Balance Me in a quest for natural pro-age skincare that they wanted to use on their own skin and their families. Spotting a gap in the market for a high-performance natural skincare brand that focused on well-being as well as results, Balance Me was born. Starting in the kitchen as part of a business bringing wellbeing to corporate offices; in 2005 Balance Me was first retailed in a pop-up shop in Topshop, London, and it was here that it attracted the attention of British Vogue and a national retailer. Over a decade later, the brand is still independently owned and has won a legion of fans plus 40 industry and media awards.

Why do customers love your brand?

We created Balance Me for people like us who juggle busy lives and are looking for natural skincare for themselves and their families that works day after day. Balance Me uses innovative natural ingredients and advanced science-led formulas to create products that focus on bringing skin back into balance and solve skin concerns, without creating others. 4. Super Moisturising Hand Cream

What is your top skincare tip?

Always double cleanse! Double cleansing is not only the best way to remove the build up of make-up and daily grime, but also the perfect way to prepare and prime your skin to easily absorb your serum and moisturiser. Double cleansing requires two different cleansers and in its simplest form, it means using a make-up removing product first, followed by a second, deeper cleanse that will condition the skin.

  • Start off by using our Flash Cleanse Micellar Water, it’s ideal for all skin types and it’s much kinder to your skin (and the environment) than using face wipes.

What are your most recent awards?

Balance Me have won over 40 industry and media awards. The most recent being ‘Best Cleanser’ by Biteable Beauty Awards, ‘Best Body Scrub’ by Harper’s Bazaar Beauty and ‘Best of Hair Category’ by Red Best of Beauty 2015.
