Beauty Editor favourite

I would scoop up the whole range of Phyto travel kits if I could – these rainbow bags are not only super pretty but packed with delicious formulas that leave your hair glossed and good to go. If I had to pick? The Damaged Hair Kit – it contains a mini of Huile Supreme, one of my all-time favourite hair oils, and has everything to combat dryness and frizz.

Anne Semonin’s new Intensive Complex Duo’s are a must this month. I can’t wait to get the Balancing Complex for myself. I also want to get my hands on the new Wild Rose Overnight Sleeping Facial from Korres when it lands later this month.

I’m so excited for Bath and Unwind’s newest brand launch – Nourish! I’m especially thrilled to be able to share their Golden Glow Illuminating Face Shimmer – an absolute makeup bag must-have for me at the moment!

Heat-wave life savers

We couldn’t be enjoying the sunshine snap more, but for skin that’s feeling a little parched you can’t do better than Elemis’s Soothing Apricot Toner. Its alcohol-free formula means it can be spritzed liberally, helping cool you down and giving your complexion a little radiance boost at the same time. For an all-over body cooler, Decleor’s Arome Tonic  smells like heaven and is perfect misted gently over tired and sticky limbs.

The eyes have it

Recent reports suggest that too many of us are putting style over substance when it comes to our sunglasses. Choosing fashion-forward frames that leave skin exposed at the side of your eyes can be a contributing factor in increased wrinkles. Want to get sensible about your shades? Look for wraparound-style sunnies that have the following:

  • the CE Mark and British Standard (BS EN 1836:2005)
  • a UV 400 label
  • a statement that the sunglasses offer 100% UV protection

As a little extra boost, we’re loving Gatineau’s Advanced Rejuvenating Eye Concentrate, from their bestselling Melatogenine range, which offers three forms of protection and rejuvenation for smoother, younger-looking eyes.

The super-food inspired hand cream

If you can’t get enough of kale, then you’ll love this new anti-ageing hand cream from Brit brand, Nourish. Combining everyone’s favourite leafy green veg with super-hydrating argan oil, it’s perfect for hands that need a hit of health.

The Limited Edition kits from This Works

Following the huge success of their In Transit range (Victoria Beckham tweeted her love for their fab primer) This Works have decided to spoil us with two brilliant Limited Edition bags bursting with a capsule collection of their travel must-haves.

The hottest summer fragrances

Two summery scents we can’t get enough of right now are Crabtree & Evelyn’s new Caribbean Island Wild Flowers which combines tropical blooms with a hint of shea butter and salt, and Miller Harris’s relaunched Le Pamplemousse with its sharp grapefruit notes.

The new discovery

Annick (our social media and design guru)

With my new exercise regime underway (yes, I’ve finally joined a gym) I really wanted something to help tone and firm skin but also be quite natural and gentle. After meeting our new brand Weleda, I added this beautiful Birch Cellulite Oil to my wish list. It’s packed with essential oils and plant extracts to help target the signs of orange peel. Plus, the heavenly scent makes it feel like a little luxury as well.

How To Detox With Style

Elle Macpherson

The New Year always has a habit of sneaking up on you, causing you to exclaim, “Where did the year go?!” Despite the surprise, we all welcome a new year with optimism and excitement… however, these feelings can be slightly dulled if you’ve hit the festive season a touch too hard. New year is the time to launch yourself into a cleansed new lifestyle that will lead to a happy and healthy year! But it’s not all about juices and cabbage, you can detox with style by following our top tips.

The Party Recovery

If you’ve succumbed to an extra glass of red wine or two and woken up feeling terrible then work your way through this 5-point plan and start feeling better, sooner.

1 – Eat a nutritious meal

Alcohol leaves you dehydrated and your stocks of essential vitamins and nutrients depleted. Refuel and reclaim the balance with a plate of eggs on wholemeal toast and a serving of spinach on the side. Eggs are a great source of cysteine, an amino acid that helps break down the toxin acetaldehyde in the liver, whilst spinach is rich in antioxidants and will help top up vitamin levels.

If you’re craving something sweeter, bananas are a great choice as they’re packed with potassium. Wash it down with coconut water for an extra boost of vital salts and natural electrolytes.

2 – Take a supplement

A supplement can really help you take the first steps of a detox. Milk thistle is thought to be the most effective at protecting your liver and speeding the ejection of alcohol from your system. B vitamins play a big part in helping your nervous system function so try taking a complex for a bit of a boost. Feeling queasy? Ginger is nature’s tummy soother so sip a ginger tea throughout the day to rehydrate, such as Pukka’s delicious Three Ginger tea.

3 – Sweat it out

You may feel sluggish and the cold winter’s air outside might not be particularly inviting, but force yourself to go for a brisk walk or perhaps something a little more strenuous, like a short jog. It will help speed up the ejection of alcohol from the body by upping your metabolic rate, and a good does of fresh air can really clear out those cobwebs!

Relaxing scents to ease your mind.

4 – Take a relaxing bath

To speed up the ejection of those nasty toxins, try running a warming bath and add purifying salts. Detox with style by using Guam’s Seaweed Algae as it will help draw impurities out of the skin and relax. If you need to catch up on missed sleep then opt for a soothing scent to help ease you towards a restorative slumber. Try Kneipp’s Lavender Herbal Bath which will nourish the body while relaxing the mind.

5 – Spritz a mood-enhancing scent

Avoid the post-Christmas blues by soothing your senses. Try Badger Balm’s Cheerful Mind Balm for an uplifting fragrance or Crabtree & Evelyn’s Lavender Eau de Toilette for something calming so you can let go of that stress and embrace the new you for the new year.

Help beat bloating

Cold weather can often get you reaching for warm comfort foods and stop you from getting outdoors. This can all lead to bloating and water retention which makes you feel tired and severely lacking energy to be proactive. When you need to re-energise from tip to toe, try these little beauties:

Body brushing helps speed up the ejection of toxins.

1 – Body brush on dry skin

If you haven’t heard about body brushing, you should integrate it immediately into your detox plan. Regular body brushing not only helps remove dead skin cells, but it helps support the lymphatic drainage system and the effective expulsion of toxins from the body. Aim to do it twice a week using a natural bristle brush like the lovely  Sp@Home brush from Elemis.

2 – Buff up with a body scrub

If you fancy something a bit gentler (and more indulgent) then rub Guam’s stimulating AlgaScrub on before hopping in the shower. It’s potent algae and sea salt blend helps energise the skin, softening and strengthening as it tones your skin.

Help tackle unwanted bloating with these fluid eliminating goodies.

3 – Battle bloating and water retention

Guam’s Fanghi d’Algae Dren Drainaige Mud is packed with antioxidant green tea and sea salt that helps drain excess water and toxins from the tissue whilst helping increase firmness. Slather it on your skin and use cling film to wrap the mud close to your skin. It will give your circulation a much needed boost and reduce water retention.

4 – Boil the kettle

Herbal teas can soothe a painful stomach, but try sipping on Caudalie’s Draining Organic Herbal Teas for some detoxing action. It’s designed to be a slimming aid and is made with a mix of health-promoting plants for a rather relaxing way to flush out toxins.

Give your complexion a little glow

Christmas time brings a month of alcohol, canapés, late nights and stressful battling through crowds at events! It’s very easy to understand that you end up suffering afterwards with breakouts, dry skin and puffiness – exactly what you don’t want when you’re after a refreshed start to the new year! Get your skin back in check with a few of these nifty little tips and start spring with a radiant shine!

Quick fix

Get fresh, bright skin when you're feeling anything but.

1 – Cleanse properly

A proper cleanse means doubling your regime with a few must-have beauty products. Start with a micellar water, such as Nuxe’s Micellar Cleansing Water, to help take off the majority of your makeup before following with a cleanser. Gently exfoliate to help rid the skin of any dry patches with Alpha H’s brilliant Micro Cleanse, to get a radiant glow.

2 – Pop on a face mask

When you think detox, the classic regime always includes face masks – there’s a reason why they’re so popular in the new year! Face masks help to intensively cleanse pores and encourage a little glow out of your face. Decleor’s lightweight Hydra Floral Plumping Expert Mask is a favourite with beauty editors for it’s Moringa oleifera proteins and sunflower extracts – they work together to protect the skin from antioxidants and external stresses for up to 24 hours.

Keep the glow going

1 – Cut down on sugar

We all know that sugar is pretty addictive, but when it comes to a detox it is paramount that you reduce your intake. Sugar is believed to be one of the key factors in skin inflammation and it can cause an increase in the appearance of wrinkles and loss of elasticity when it attaches to the collagen in your skin. Try natural stevia sweetners or a sprinkle of cinnamon as tasty sugar substitutes and aim to eat more fresh veg instead of reaching for high-sugar fruits.

Elle Macpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow are big fans of healthy eating plans.

2 – Eat good fats

The best skin-plumping foods contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and the good news? They’re delicious AND filling! A helping of avocado on rye toast makes a wholesome breakfast, a tofu stirfry with sesame oil will be tasty dinner, and grab a handful of brazil nuts or almonds as a nutritious snack. try cooking with coconut oil as well as it’s a healthier alternative to vegetable of olive oil.

3 – Using time as an excuse?

If you just don’t have the time to chase up quality ingredients or you’re not sure where to start, then The Detox Kitchen (Elle MacPherson and Gwyneth Paltrow are fans) and Balance Box are two companies who will cut out all the hard work and bring meals brimming with goodness right to your door.

Detox with style: Make-up…

If you’re fighting off the effects of a hectic festive season or you’ve had a bigger night than intended, then your makeup needs to go that extra mile. Try these little tips to fake a wide-awake complexion and fool all into thinking you’ve successfully detoxed with style:

Soothing formulas for glowing skin.

1 – Pop moisturiser and eye gel in the fridge

The coolness will help combat puffiness and reduce swelling. Go for AHA-rich formulas which are very moisturising (make sure to pop on an SPF over the top). Bliss Ex-glow-sion! helps boost collagen in the skin with a little help from Micro-algae extracts and vitamin C.

2 – Plump for a light-reflecting base

A light-reflecting base will help simulate a healthy glow. Use a light foundation or tinted moisturiser, such as This Works Perfect Look Skin Miracle, and a cream blush to mimic invigorated skin. Warm colours help combat a drawn pallor so think apricot or blush pink – try Jane Iredale’s Forever Pink stain for a flattering finish to cheeks and lips. Add a pop of gloss to give your lips a little shine and your good to go!

Keep these on hand to fake a wide-awake look.

3 – Avoid heavy eye shadows

Instead of heavy eye shadows, go for a slick of metallic shimmer which reflect the light. Try New CID’s flattering silver Shadow Quad or Elizabeth Arden’s warming gold Precious Metals for a colour that will enhance your features.

4 – Keep a hydrating mist on-hand

Hydrating mists are brilliant for regular moisture top-ups! Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir is extra refreshing and Jurlique’s heavenly rose-scented Moisture Plus Balancing Mist will help keep your complexion hydrated and protected.

… and don’t forget to detox your make-up bag

There’s no point trying to be stylish in your detox if your make-up bag is drab and ratty. Upgrade your bag for the new year and give all your tools a good clean. Your brushes and sponges collect grease, oil and bacteria which can cause outbreaks on your skin so be sure to wash them regularly with a little squeeze of your normal shampoo.

Here’s to a new year where we can all look and feel the best that we can be! Farewell tired and lack lustre skin, hello hydrated and youthful features.

And the countdown begins…

This week marked the 100 day countdown to Christmas. (Yes Santa, you better start wrapping up my presents!) And this brought me back down to Earth with a little bit of a bump – I was still holding out for our summer! Oh well, as the days are already starting to get shorter, I suppose I better store the bikinis away and dig out my fluffy hat and mittens. (Yes, I do wear a fluffy hat, and yes, it does also have little ears on the top!) As I know my skin reacts badly when the wind starts to pick up and get colder, I thought this year prevention would be better than cure so I am going to start protecting my skin from the cold right away. And here is how I’m going to do it…

My Face:

Every single year, just around October time, I get awful red and dry skin all over my chin, just beneath my lips. This is neither cool nor attractive, in fact, it looks like I have dribbled Cherryade all down my face and haven’t bothered to wipe it off. So, this year, I am going to replace my moisturiser with Barefoot Botanicals SOS Rescue Me Face & Body Cream. This has worked wonders on my dry and tight hands, and can be used on skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. If my calculations are correct, applying this every day before bed and before I head off to work in the morning should help soothe and rehydrate my skin before I head out into the cold again. Genius!

My Lips:

Every winter I face a dilemma. Do I wear lipstick to add that necessary splash of colour to my face, or do I wear lip balm to stop my lips from chapping and to keep them lovely and soft? Well, this year I don’t have to sacrifice either, as I have recently discovered Carmex’s Moisture Plus Lip Balm in Pink. This lip balm is infused with vitamin E and aloe vera to nourish and protect my lips, whilst bursting with a pink shimmer to keep me looking as glam as possible through the winter months!

My Hands:

I’m sure we have all been in that situation when we are walking from A to B and we suddenly realise we have forgotten our gloves. This is annoying as not only are our hands getting cold, but as if by magic, as soon as we realise we are too far away to run home to get them our hands all of a sudden feel tight and rough. This is exactly why I am ensuring that this year I have Crabtree & Evelyn’s La Source Mini 60 Second Hand Cream tucked firmly away in my coat pocket. These handy little travel sizes mean that whenever we are out and about, we can make sure our hands are being protected from the harsh weather. Another plus is that these little tubes look so nice, we won’t mind showing them off in public!

Do you have any winter saviour secrets to share?

Skincare from the sea

Look at any news website today and you will undoubtedly see headlines about film director James Cameron’s amazing solo journey to the Mariana Trench which, at nearly 11km deep, is the deepest place in the ocean. He is only the third person to ever visit the trench and his 12 tonne, lime green submarine, Deepsea Challenger, was kitted out with special 3D cameras, allowing him to film the three hours he spent on the ocean floor. I have been inspired to watch my DVD of The Blue Planet again, the fantastic documentary narrated by David Attenborough which introduced millions of us to the secrets of the world’s oceans (and was produced by the BBC Natural History Unit which is based just up the road from Bath & Unwind HQ in Bristol).

Guam Seaweed Algae Bath Salts

Bumble and bumble Seaweed Shampoo

Many beauty products contain marine ingredients such as seaweed (actually an umbrella term for a variety of complex algae), which contains a number of beneficial nutrients. Here are some of our favourites:

I’m super organised this Christmas (so you don’t have to be!)

Yes, you’re going to hate me but I have pretty much got all my Christmas shopping done already. Granted, I have a distinct advantage in that buying things is not just a hobby, it’s my job!  And yes, most of my family will be receiving presents from Bath & Unwind HQ, but the gifts we have on offer this year are (yet again) so gorgeous. I could shop around, but I’m unapologetically biased and to me Bath & Unwind is the only place to choose gifts for the special people in my life.  So here is a sneak peek, feel free to take inspiration from my ideas (family- look away now).

For my lovely Mum

This was so easy for me, as soon as I saw the Ruby & Ed slippers arrive here at Bath & Unwind, I knew my mum ( loving all things cosy) would really appreciate a pair of these sleek but snuggly ballet slippers. Ruby & Ed Velvet Bow Ballerina in Dusty Plum  £37.50

For my Dad

Tricky one. But this is kind of a present for my mum at the same time, because Miller Harris fragrances are unisex so they can share this distinct and iconic EDP, and mum will be happy that I am continuing to ‘spruce’ up Dad with grooming products! Miller Harris Feuilles De Tabac Parfume EDP 50ml £60

For my best friend – the beauty junkie

What I love about Christmas in the beauty world is that skincare brands put together such fantastic gift sets with obscene amounts of value in them. It’s almost worth stocking up on them for yourself,  for great savings on your skincare throughout the year. This year Gatineau have not disappointed with their Christmas Collections and you can save up to £124. Gatineau Radiance Discovery Collection £25 (Retail value £56.75)

For My Aunty

I know my Aunty will appreciate a gift created by a trusted brand she has been using on her hardworking hands forever. I love gifts that come in re-useable boxes or tins like this one. In fact I might just have to snap one up for myself! Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Hand Care Tin £25

For my Niece

Love & Toast products just ooze that quirky coolness that all teenage girls go crazy for. Her friends will be so ‘jel’ when she whips this lip balm out of her bag. In fact I might buy an assortment so that she can give them to her friends as presents as well. What a thoughtful Aunty I am! Love & Toast Lip Balms in Cherry Lemonade, Prickly Pear and Vanilla Chai £9.50
